Shared note

Magdelin's family were believed to be French Protestant refugees who came to Virginia in 1700 on the ship Mary and Ann. Three other ships did sail to Virginia (from England) full of French Protestant refugees. King William of England paid for the passage of about 500 refugees, gave them land, and exempted them from taxes for seven years.

"Louiss Orange, sa femme et un enfant" (Louis Orange, his wife, and one infant) are listed as passengers aboard this vessel, having sailed from England, fleeing the persecution in France of Louis XIV when he Promulgated the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. These people truly came to America for religious freedom.
