Note

Dortha Mae Montgomery Ivey

On October 26, 1930, a little girl was born to the late J. M. and Pearlie Montgomery. This little girl grew up in Decatur County and married the love of her life, the late Rev. J. C. Ivey. God blessed their union with three children: Bobby, Brenda and Linda. She began to work in garment manufacturing and served as a supervisor in various garment factories. She accepted the call to minister the gospel and preached numerous revivals. During their years of ministry, she assisted her husband in pastoring several churches as well as hosting a radio broadcast. She is fondly remembered for her singing and accordion playing. She sang often about “no grave holding her body down when the trumpet should sound.”

Dortha passed to her eternal reward on May 7, 2025 in Lexington, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. J. C. Ivey; her son, Bobby Ivey; her parents; and all her siblings.

Dortha is survived by two daughters, Brenda (Earl Wayne) Day, of Selmer, Tenn. and Linda (Danny) Swafford, of Reagan, Tenn.

She is also survived by six grandchildren, Tabothy Edgin, Jonathan (Ginger) Ivey, Bobbie Ivey, Jeff Day, Lisa (Jimmy) Kelley and Michael (Kelly) Swafford; 13 great-grandchildren, Matthew Edgin, Drew Ivey, Whitney Ferris, Jarrett Ivey, Brylee, Brooklyn and Morgan Phillips, Justina (Jeremy) Martin, Jeremy (Hayley) Day, Jessica (Daniel) Scott, Larissa (Aaron) McDonald, Melanie (Scott) Whitley and Dalton (Victoria) Swafford; 17 great-great-grandchildren, Lily Ivey, Denver Ferris, Eleanor Ivey, Cooper Ivey, Jace Martin, Jameson Martin, Parker Day, Charlotte Day, Kaden Scott, Briella Scott, Logan Finley, Annalise Finley, Jonah Whitley, Jude Whitley, Joseph Whitley, Izabella Swafford and J. C. Swafford.

Her funeral service will be held at Reed's Chapel, Decaturville, TN, at 12 p.m. on Friday, May 9 with Monty Dickey and Danny Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in Grays Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. until service.
